My first roller garage door!

When I moved into my first house at the age of 22, I had to decide on what type of garage door I'd be getting. I was faced with two options, a roller garage door and a run of the mill 'ordinary' garage door. After much deliberation and with to much added expense I went with the former.

What I didn't realise at the time, was that the company I purchased the garage door from was notorious for delivering a less than poor service! So when the garage door finally arrived, I was shocked to see that the measurements were completely out of whack. The entry had a width of 265cm, however the door I received was a whopping 465cm! I was utterly stunned to see how a company could get it so wrong.

What I have learned from ordering garage roller doors is that you need to be vigilant when placing your trust in the hands of a potentially dodgy dealer. Ever since then I have picked extremely carefully and one company I couldn't recommend more is EasyFitGarageDoors. They provide quality roller garage doors and I have since purchased from them on numerous occasions. Installation was easy and the garage doors were reliable, secure and most of all - THEY FITTED!!!

How to tell a good from a bad roller garage door?

Here we will look at the top 4 warning signs when purchasing a roller garage door.

1. Measurements

Does the door fit the shape? If you are buying from a warehouse or a company that has a poor or unknown reputation. Be sure to double check the measurements before and after purchasing to make sure that it is an exact fit. If these are out by the slightest margin, you may find yourself with a completely useless door! Do not assume that all companies will be operate competently.

2. Locks

Garage roller doors are always fitted with locks. Double check the lock, make sure it's sturdy and secure. After all, a garage roller door is there to protect your possessions, do not compromise on security!

3. Cracks and weak spots

Quality garage roller doors will never suffer from this problem. However far too often suppliers will compromise on quality to ensure a large mark-up. Do not be afraid to ask questions, ask what materials it is made from and whether it has had a proper finish to secure it from the elements.

4. Is it electric? Remote? Motorised?

Some garage doors are operated remotely and use a motor to open and close. Quality motors are important as it is not uncommon for them to over heat and cause a potential fire hazard. Watch out for dodgy motors and dangerous cabling for electric doors. Faulty motors can cause an unimaginable amount of hassle for any garage owner and therefore should be checked carefully!

Garage Door Car Crash

roller garage door crash

Pretty unbelievable I know, but it's not uncommon for people to go tearing straight through their garage roller door. This incident of a Porsche 911 Turbo being launched through a garage door by the owner's son tops the lot. $180,000 worth of car and possibly a few quid for the garage door as well. Incredible! But here's what his son had to say about the roller garage door.

"
I thought the Turbo had been stolen. Our garage has a full security system, but this is one of the most desirable cars in the world, so you never know. Will tried to speak again. “The Turbo rolled into the door….” I walked past him into the garage. For nearly a minute, I was too dumbfounded to speak. The Turbo hadn’t rolled into the door – it had launched itself through the entire structure. In a distance of approximately four feet, the Turbo had developed enough kinetic energy to blow the entire door apart. Parts of the roller mechanism were scattered through the alley.

When I parked it, the Turbo had been pristine. Now it looked like the car from Dukes of Hazzard after a chase through the southern backwoods. Stunned, I surveyed the damage. The hood was raked with gouges, the top of the right front fender was flattened, and the driver’s door (which is made from aluminum to save weight) had taken a beating. Worst of all was the rear fender, which had hit the concrete door frame as the Turbo launched itself into the alley – it looked like a giant blacksmith had smacked it with a sledge hammer."

The top 5 Benefits of a Roller Garage Door

For most people, a garage door is absolutely essential for security and a place to store tools and more importantly... cars. What people don't know is that without the right garage door you may find that security, safety and storage is not quite as simple as you once thought! This blog will go into detail about roller garage doors and how they can really benefit your household and lifestyle. To begin with, let's talk about my top 5 benefits of owning a roller garage door.

1. Security

Security is an issue for any household no matter where you are. To help improve security, install a garage roller door or garage door that fits the exact dimensions of your garage and most of all, has a good strong lock on the front of it! Electric garage doors are even safer and it's worth fitting an alarm to the door as well.

2. Keep your car clean and safe

Garage are a great little home for a car. They provide protection from theft and the elements. No bird poop to rip off the paint working, no snow encrusted windscreens to wipe or frozen windows. It also stops careless drivers taking off the side of your car as they drive down your little cul-de-sac at 50mph.

3. Decoration

Garage roller doors are actually great decoration. There are many different styles of doors including shutter garage doors. You can also paint the door to fit its surroundings or to show off your brand new garage! Whilst it's not essential that your garage looks nice, it's a nice little household accessory to have.

4. Storage

Garages are perfect for storage. And of course you're not going to store tools or anything else in a place without no safely secured door on the front! So garage roller doors are a great way to protect your garage items from potential thieves. There are a whole bunch of household items that just wouldn't fit in a home, so this is where a garage is absolutely perfect.

5. Increase the price of your home

A nicely sized garage either attached or detached to your house is a great way to boost the value of your home. Garages can easily add an extra £10,000-£20,000 value to your home's price. So by having a securely fitted, good looking garage door you are boosting the additional value of the garage to its absolute maximum!
